Benjamin Ray “Bennie” Hendrix

Bennie was born on July 8, 1949 in Jacksonville, Florida. His parents were dedicated race fans and carried him as a child to the weekly races at the Old Jacksonville Speedway on Lenox Avenue. Bennie became a die hard race fan and in his early teen years got a job as pit gate attendant for Julian Klein. He advanced to higher positions such as pit steward, safety inspector, flagman, etc. at many tracks in Florida and Georgia including Waycross, Brunswick, Cordelle, Augusta, Swainsboro, both tracks in Valdosta and Savannah. Florida tracks were Barberville, Ocala, Palatka, New Smyrna, both track in Jacksonville, St. Augustine and Lake City.

He was Track Steward for Dixie Dirt Track Association, and was present at the first race held at most of the above tracks. He was instrumental in getting race cars and drivers to visit schools and Boys Clubs of America for our youth to enjoy, also organizing Radio, Television and Newspaper Personality races at local tracks. Bennie regards Old Jacksonville Speedway and Jax Raceways on Pecan Park Road as his home tracks.

Bennie’s lifelong love, interest and continuous association with Stock Car Racing makes him a valuable asset to this sport and his 1994 induction as a honorary member of the Jacksonville Stock Car Racing Hall of Fame
